Studies have evaluated the direct and indirect savings for each dollar spent
on Hib immunization in a variety of countries (13):
Israel: 1.5 dollar (1993)
Chile: 1.7 dollar (1993)
Sweden: 1.6 dollar (1994)
Spain: between 2.4 and 5.1 dollars, depending on the means of immunization
(1995)
- United States: between 2.2 and 5.1 dollars (1995)
- South Africa (Cape Town): between 1.3 and 1.4 dollar (1995).
In the United States, a study published in 1994 on the immunization of
individuals 65 years and older showed that private insurance companies saved 117
dollars in medical costs per person. The authors of the study estimated that for
each dollar spent on immunization, 30 to 60 dollars were saved in
hospitalization costs.
In France, one estimate in 1992 concluded that total annual savings (medical
costs and reduced work absenteeism) ranged between 169 and 3,530 million francs,
depending on the scenario.
An American study concluded that a 60% Hib vaccinal coverage of children 18
months old generated overall savings of 207.1 million dollars per.
